Lithotripsy With Lithostar
What Is Lithotripsy?
"Lithotripsy" is derived from the Greek words meaning "stone
fragmentation." The lithotripsy therapy system, Lithostar, generates
low energy shock-wave impulses that are focused on the kidney stone, causing
it to break into tiny particles which can be passed naturally from the
urinary system.
Why Lithostar? What are its benefits?
The Lithostar is the most advanced system available for the non-surgical
removal of kidney stones.
Earlier
lithotripsy units required the administration of anesthesia or heavy sedation
and patients had to be immersed in a water bath to transmit the high energy
shock wave. Also, the treatment usually required an overnight stay in
the hospital. With the new Lithostar, lower energy shock waves are used
and no water bath is required. A mild sedative to aid in comfort may be
prescribed. Little or no anesthesia is needed.
What Treatment Is Available?
Until recently, the only method to remove stones was surgery. Today, however,
a new non-surgical technique is available. It's called Extracorporeal
Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) and has been hailed as a revolutionary medical
breakthrough in patient safety and comfort.
What Can a Patient Expect During a Lithostar Treatment?
Treatment with the Lithostar is fairly simple and typically proceeds
in the following manner:
- The patient will be comfortably positioned on the ESWL Lithostar treatment table.
- An x-ray will be taken to determine the precise location of the stones.
- The shock wave applicator will be placed against the side of the body.
- The Lithostar includes video x-ray equipment enabling the physician to see stones, follow the fragmentation process, and carefully monitor the entire treatment procedure.
